Botox Q & A

Frequently asked questions about Botox

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin approved for medical treatments. When Dr. Aggarwal administers Botox injections, the medication temporarily blocks the nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions. By carefully injecting the appropriate dose into specific muscles, the muscles relax, helping relieve pain, muscle tightness, and other neurological symptoms.

Botox is especially beneficial for treating several neurological conditions, including:

Chronic Migraines

Migraine headaches are considered chronic when you experience 15 or more headache days each month, with at least eight of those days being migraines, and each migraine lasting four hours or longer.

Botox injections can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of future migraines. Treatment involves carefully placed injections in seven key muscle groups around the head and neck.

Post-Stroke Spasticity

Following a stroke, communication between the brain and muscles may become disrupted. This can cause muscles to remain continuously contracted, resulting in spasticity or muscle spasms.

Symptoms may include:

  • Painful muscle stiffness
  • Bent elbows or clenched arms
  • Arms pulled toward the chest
  • Leg stiffness
  • Pointed or curled feet

Botox helps relax affected muscles, improving comfort, mobility, and daily function.

Dystonia

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that cause repetitive movements, abnormal postures, or painful muscle spasms.

Botox is commonly used to treat cervical dystonia, which affects the neck muscles, as well as dystonia involving other areas of the body by reducing muscle overactivity and improving quality of life.

Before your procedure, Dr. Aggarwal will explain every step of your treatment and answer any questions you may have. The number of injections depends on the condition being treated and the muscles involved.

Because the effects of Botox gradually wear off over time, treatments are typically repeated approximately every three months to maintain the best results.

For certain conditions, such as chronic migraine prevention, more than one treatment session may be needed to determine your individual response. Most patients receive two treatment cycles spaced three months apart before evaluating the long-term effectiveness of therapy.
